Dear Loyola Lion Families,
Yesterday, Loyola celebrated Unity Day by wearing orange to show their support for students who have experienced bullying and to celebrate kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Throughout the school, teachers read books about kindness and standing up for others, sparking conversations about how our words and actions affect those around us. Our Spirit Club also brought the message to life by working with students across grade levels during lunch to create orange paper chains featuring words and messages of kindness to display around campus. Unity Day reminds us that creating a safe and welcoming school community is everyone’s responsibility. Together, we can make sure every Lion feels seen, valued, and that they belong!
Rock N’ Roar Walkathon 🦁
What an amazing day at our Rock N’ Roar Walkathon! Our students and community came together for a day filled with energy, fun, and school spirit. I especially loved getting out on the track to run laps with our students and running under the water tent was definitely a highlight! A huge thank-you to our incredible volunteer chairs and their teams for all their time, organization, and tireless efforts in making this event such a success.
- Chairs: Aubrey Rotschi and Mary Erginsoy
- Games: Prathima Rao, Jody Akana, and Lizzie Davis
- T-shirt Distribution: Hemant and Sheetal Sahni, and Lauren Macomber
- Food: Alice Zhang-Lee
- Safety: Lizzie Davis
Thank you to these amazing volunteers, along with all the families and community members who helped make the day so special. Events like this are a wonderful reminder of what makes our Loyola community so strong!

Volunteering form and reminder: If you were fingerprinted at the Walkathon, please make sure you also completed the LASD volunteer form. You only need to be fingerprinted if you plan to be a Level 2 volunteer. But getting your Fingerprinting alone done does not complete the volunteer process, and your fingerprints will not be linked to your volunteer information with LASD without the completed form. Thank you for taking this extra step to help ensure you are cleared to volunteer at Loyola!

Mrs. Kabertlin’s Kindergarten Class — Closed and Open Questions
In Mrs. Kabertlin’s kindergarten classroom, Deeper Learning begins with curiosity and the belief that even our youngest learners have important questions and ideas to share. Since the beginning of the school year, students have been encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and explore different perspectives. During their first social studies unit on rules, a student asked, “What is a fair rule?” This question sparked a conversation about fairness, including whether cutting in line is fair and whether it should be a rule. Across phonics, math, writing, science, and social studies, students’ thinking is made visible through classroom learning walls, where they share their ideas through drawings, oral explanations, and emerging writing. Thinking routines such as See, Think, Wonder further encourage students to observe carefully, ask questions, and explore new ideas.
This week, Room 7 took their questioning skills a step further by exploring the difference between closed and open-ended questions. Using a picture of two lions, a meaningful connection to their Loyola Lion community and their upcoming science inquiry, “Do plants, animals, and humans have the same needs to survive?” students practiced moving beyond simple observations like “lion” and “two” to develop more thoughtful questions. With visual supports, hand motions, and question starters such as who, what, why, and how, students learned to distinguish questions with brief or yes/no answers from those that invite deeper thinking and discussion. This learning experience highlights Deeper Learning in action: students building questioning skills, making their thinking visible, and developing the curiosity and agency to guide their own learning.

If you were at the Rock ‘N’ Roar Walkathon last weekend, you know how AMAZING it was! Students and parents had a rockin’ good time all while raising important funds to support our school! This event would not have been possible without our dedicated Walkathon Committee who planned the event for months and all of our supportive parent volunteers on the day of the event. We are SO GRATEFUL to our Walkathon Committee!
- Lead Co-Chairs: Aubrey Rotschi, Mary Erginsoy
- Games: Prathima Rao, Jody Akana, Lizzie Davis
- Shirt Distribution: Hemant and Sheetal Sahni, Lauren Macomber
- Food: Alice Zhang-Lee
- Safety: Lizzie Davis
The Walkathon chairs are still not done with their event! They have been tallying up scores and preparing prizes for all our winners. In preparation for next year’s event, they would appreciate 5 minutes of your time to fill out THIS SURVEY so they can try to make it even better!
Register HERE by October 25 for Loyola's Spooktacular Trunk-or-Treat on Friday, October 30, 5:30-7 PM. Loyola students and siblings are invited to go “trunk or treating” in the Loyola parking lot and enjoy a complimentary light dinner. Although hosting a vehicle is not required to attend, we need about 10 more families to volunteer to host vehicle trunks for the event to run. Hosting is easy! Just dress up your car's trunk in a not-so-scary Halloween costume (many available on Amazon) and pass out treats (provided by the host family). Contact Malinda Lee ( malinda.shinrhei@gmail.com) or Ketaki Deo ( ketz.deo@gmail.com) with questions.
The Loyola Book Fair will be on campus in the Multi, November 3-5. Parents can access the Book Fair at morning drop-off and afternoon pickup on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. In addition, there will be a Book Fair Family Night on Wed, Nov 4 at 4:30-7:00 PM featuring guest reader Ms. Rafferty, a kids' activity table, and La Familia Taqueria food truck. Buy gift cards for your child or child’s teacher to use at the Book Fair. Event contacts: Cristina ( cristinaktmchugh@gmail.com), Lauren ( akins.lauren@gmail.com), Zaynah ( zaynah.rahman@gmail.com).
