A Letter from the Principal

Hello Lion Families,

What a wonderful first week at Loyola! It has been such a joy to see our campus filled with smiling faces, eager learners, and the energy that comes with beginning a new school year. Our students have jumped right in, getting to know their teachers and classmates, learning new routines, and beginning to build the classroom communities that will support them throughout the year.

It was especially wonderful to see so many of you at our Back-to-School Picnic last Friday evening. There is something special about seeing our Loyola community come together, families connecting, children playing, and our teachers and staff getting to know the people who make our school so special. Thank you for being there and for helping us begin the year with such a strong sense of community. We are truly better together!

Looking Ahead: Our Aspirations for the Year
As we begin a new school year, we are also beginning with big hopes and aspirations for our students. Across Loyola and the Los Altos School District, we are continuing to ask ourselves an important question:

How can we intentionally design even better learning experiences for our students?
We believe that when we intentionally design better learning experiences, we create better outcomes for students. This means continually reflecting on what we do, being willing to try new ideas, and looking closely at what helps every child learn, grow, and thrive.

Whether we are refining instruction, strengthening systems, or exploring new ideas, our goal remains the same—to create learning experiences where students think deeply, collaborate meaningfully, solve authentic problems, and develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions they need to thrive.

We want our students to do more than simply know the answers. We want them to be curious. To ask thoughtful questions. To persevere when something is challenging. To listen to different perspectives. To communicate their thinking. To make connections. To solve problems that matter. And, most importantly, to see themselves as capable learners who can make a difference in their classrooms, their communities, and the world around them.

This work takes all of us. Our teachers and staff bring expertise, creativity, and a deep commitment to knowing each child. Our students bring curiosity, questions, and their unique strengths and perspectives. And our families are essential partners in helping children develop the confidence and dispositions they need to become lifelong learners.

As we move into the weeks ahead, I hope you will continue to feel the excitement, care, and purpose that are woven throughout our campus. We have a wonderful year ahead of us, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be on this journey with our students, families, and staff.

Here’s to a year of learning, growing, wondering, creating, and thriving—together!

Be Kind, Be Strong, Be Well,

Deeper Learning Spotlight

Deeper Learning in Third Grade

Deeper Learning was in action in our third-grade classrooms as students collaborated, communicated, and strengthened their mathematical thinking through a Bridges Math workplace (game) called Target 20. Working with partners, students used strategic thinking and problem-solving to determine how to reach 20, explaining their reasoning, listening to different approaches, and making thoughtful decisions along the way. Rather than simply practicing math skills, students were actively engaged in making sense of numbers, learning from one another, and developing perseverance. This is Deeper Learning in action: students thinking deeply, collaborating meaningfully, and using their learning in purposeful and engaging ways.

PTA News

We hope you had a great first week of school and that you’re back in the swing of things!

It was wonderful to see so many of you at our annual Back-t0-School Picnic last Friday! A massive thank you to Deborah Chang and Stefanie Shanks for organizing our first school-wide event and to our amazing Loyola teachers and staff for joining us and making the evening so special!

We are recruiting for the Safety and Emergency Preparedness Committee! No special training is required. We need 1-2 parent representatives to join Mrs. Rafferty and several teacher representatives on this important committee to discuss campus safety and safety drills (in particular, “The Big Shake Out” held in mid-October) and update and implement emergency preparedness plans. Time commitment: 1 short meeting per semester with the committee + updating the emergency shed and classroom emergency backpacks with supplies on your own time (i.e. replace any expiring items). Please contact Loyola.Elementary.PTA@gmail.com if you are interested.

Please remember to fill out your 2026 Loyola PTA Back-to-School Form! Join the PTA and find out about volunteer opportunities both in and out of the classroom. One lower grade (TK-3rd) and one upper grade (4th-6th) with the highest percentage of submissions will enjoy a celebration party (date TBD) and any grade that has a submission rate of at least 80% will get extra recess time (date TBD)!

We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, August 25, at Back-to-School Night! This is an adults only event, 5:30 to 7 PM. Remember to book your babysitters for an extra couple hours so you can join us for Parents’ Night Out at The Redwood Grill immediately afterwards (until 9 PM)! Light appetizers will be served.

Important Upcoming Dates:
  • Back to School Night: Tuesday, August 25, 5:30-7 PM

Los Altos Educational Foundation

Let’s come together and support a high-quality, well-rounded education at Loyola this school year.

For 44 years, LAEF has funded the teachers, staff, and programs that make our students’ education exceptional beyond what public funding covers.

Beginning in 2026–27, LAEF is expanding its role by fundraising for instructional programs and materials that were previously supported by the PTAs. This change allows us to provide more consistent support for these programs across every LASD school. This is a shift in fundraising responsibility, not educational priorities, creating clearer roles and simpler giving for families. So we are asking you to shift some of their donations toward LAEF, in a similar way to how the fundraising responsibilities are shifting.

Let's set our students up for a successful year. Learn more about what your gift makes possible.
Here’s how to partner with us:
Complete the LASD Back to School process at LASDEducationPartners.org
Step 1: Donate to LAEF
Step 2: Join and donate to the PTA for each school your children attend

Thank you for supporting our neighborhood schools!

Los Altos School District iLearn Studio
201 Covington Road, Los Altos CA 94024

Living Classroom is seeking volunteers to teach our fun nature-based lessons and help care for our school gardens. No experience necessary as we teach you everything you need to know. Please join us from 9:30am-12:30pm on Mondays 8/31-10/19* at the LASD iLearn Studio to train to become a volunteer docent (*no training on 9/7 - Labor Day). If Mondays don't work for you, please ask about our apprentice-style training option. If you are interested in helping to care for your school garden, please contact Living Classroom Garden Manager, Sandi Elefant. For questions or to RSVP for docent training, please email us at livingclassroom@lasdschools.org or call (650) 947-1103. Check us out at LivingClassroomLASD.org!

Become an Art Docent!

The Art Docent training program gives new volunteers everything they need to feel confident bringing art into the classroom. Trainees explore all the art mediums we teach while learning classroom management skills, how to lead engaging discussions, and how to give effective demonstrations.

New Docent Training takes place on Thursday mornings from 8:45–11:30 a.m. starting September 3rd and includes technique, art content, and general program topics. Once training begins, new docents gradually gain classroom experience—assisting in September, co-leading in November and December, and moving into assisting, co-leading, and leading lessons from January through May.

Join us! It’s a wonderful way to learn something new, share your creativity, and make a lasting impact on our students!
